  Fanm Kouraj - Courageous Women

  (Kreyòl)

Fanm Kouraj is a group of women activists in the Matenwa community dedicated to improving the situation of women and children in Haitian culture.

The group is especially concerned with a Haitian custom called restavèk where a family that lacks the means to support a child sends the child to live with another family, sometimes a relative, who is a little bit better off. However, due to the desperate conditions in Haiti, these children are seldom nurtured and often become virtual slaves--abused, forced to work exhausting hours, and denied an education.

In an effort to raise awareness in the community about the needs and rights that all children have, Fanm Kouraj sponsored a Children's Festival inMarch 2006
