The group is especially concerned with a Haitian custom
called restavèk where a family that lacks the
means to support a child sends the child to live with another family,
sometimes a relative, who is a little bit better off. However, due
to the desperate conditions in Haiti, these children are seldom nurtured
and often become virtual slaves--abused, forced to work exhausting
hours, and denied an education. |
