Our vision is to see that each person in the community has a backyard vegetable garden. This is a way to combat hunger, rising prices, and provide a means for people to earn money.

This committee was started in 2006 by people who recognized a need for people in the area to start raising vegetables at home. We estimate that each of the communities where we are working has about 100 families.

.Here on LaGonave we have everything we need to produce vegetables locally. We have soil and fertilizer. We can find seeds and a few tools. What we see is that people lack understanding about how they can spend less and receive more by cultivating their own vegetables.

We are now in our third year and helping about 100 families in 13 communities with gardens.

Someone helped us buy some tools for people to share for making vegetable gardens, and we distributed these tools. We have helped people prepare their soil. We have raised plant nurseries. We have distributed both seeds and plants. We have supported over a hundred gardens in 13 communities. We have conducted trainings about : compost, natrual fertilizers, preparing ground for vegetables, watering techniques, natural insectisides, seed saving.

Mission:

• To establish a structure of groups and a committee to encourage vegetable gardening through training, encouraging discussion of both problems and successes, and documenting work that occurs.
• To obtain the training and information garden activists need to advance this work, and that people gardening at home need to succeed.
• We are committed to local seed saving.

• Our activities won't be limited to vegetable gardens, but can also include fruit trees, raising livestock and activities to restore the environment

Activities

• We are active in Matènwa, Bwanwa, Degoute, Monchal, Lapye, Plènmapou, Nan Jozen, Nanplim, Nankafe, Tèwouj, Tèblanch, Masikrèn.
• We will work hard for the 100 gardens we are already supporting to succeed.
• We will do training for people engaged in gardening work as they need it.
• We will do research or find training for committee members as it is needed..
• We will organize a means for people to obtain seeds and seedlings.
• We will organize a means for people to have access to the tools they need.
  

• We visit the gardens we are supporting once a week.
• We will find a way to prepare natural insecticides in large quantities in advance so people can use them as they need them
• We would like to have a wider influence, such as the lower regions of Lagonav where we have contacts in PwenLatanye.
• We would like to engage with more schools, churches, and other stable groups who are already working and thinking together and who are likely to have access to water.
• We would like to construct a few cisterns, should we find the means.

Guidelines

• To start a garden, a person needs a piece of land, some fertilizer, and a means to water.
• A person who has a backyard garden must commit to taking care of it.
• Everyone is responsible, to the best of their ability, to help make this gardening program work out.

• People who have gardens will stay in touch with the committee, both when the garden is doing well, and when there are problems such as insects and diseases.
• People who grow tomatoes, eggplant, amaranth, and peppers in their gardens will save seeds from those plants.
• The committee will be responsible for growing plants in nurseries and distributing them.
